The Men’s 3s endured a tough afternoon at the hands of Doncaster 4s this weekend. Buoyed by a recent run of form, high flying Doncaster hit them for six without reply as the Evergreens still search for 3 points to secure their safety in league 1.
Despite the scoreline, Chesterfield can take much from the game as they continue to blood the youngsters and prepare them for a successful career in the adults game. Ieuan Hooper, Ellis Laming, Chay Brown, Max Lawson and Kieran Wright added some much needed youthful exuberance to an aging squad but showed enough stick skills and timely tackles to contribute more than just legs and energy.
Chesterfield were in the game but for 3 sucker punches in an 8 minute first half period when the game slipped away from them. The Evergreens became increasingly perplexed by a number of umpiring decisions which resulted in first a green then an upgraded yellow card for their front talisman Rob Anderson. Indeed, the afternoon continued in the same vein for the target man as he received short shrift from the home umpires.
Despite the 4-0 scoreline at half time, Chesterfield continued to play some good hockey at times and had their fair share of half chances. On the other hand, Doncaster were clinical in the D, something which they have struggled with this season, scoring more than 3 for the first time in a single game.
Chesterfield will have to pick themselves up and dust themselves off as they travel to relegation rivals Alford next week.
