Heartbreak for Chesterfield in the final minutes

Chesterfield 1 v Lindum 2
Tuesday 24/10/2023

Final Score: 2 - 3
Goalscorers: Luke Nash (FG) & Freddie Ormerod (PC).
MoM: Freddie Ormerod.

There was heartbreak for the Chesterfield players as they lost the game in the final 2 minutes. Chesterfield's first point of the season looked all but secured, thanks to goals from Luke Nash & Freddie Ormerod in the first half. However the visitors, Lindum, had other ideas and scored a breakaway goal in the final minutes, putting the game out of reach for Chesterfield.

Tuesday's match was hastily rearranged after Storm Babet caused havoc with Chesterfield's roads on Friday, and both teams were raring to go from the start. An exciting first half saw plenty of action at both ends. Luke Nash picked up a lose ball outside the 25, drove into the circle and finished strongly on his reverse, giving the goalkeeper little chance to react. Chesterfield held the lead for 5 minutes, before Lindum struck back. The Lindum midfielder ran into the circle, bypassing Chesterfield's defenders and getting shot off which was deflected past the stranded 'keeper, Gibbon. 5 minutes later, and Lindum score again. This time the Lindum forward picks up the ball after the ball isn't cleared fully and taps in from close range. The first half looked to be ending in Lindum's favour, but a penalty corner was converted by Freddie Ormerod for Chesterfield. His powerful strike deflecting off the defenders foot and into the top of the net and over the prone goalkeeper. Further chances came for both sides, but the half ended in a stalemate at 2-2.

The second half was fairly evenly balanced, but in the end turned on two moments. Chesterfield's opportunity came in the 58th minute as Sam Unwin broke clear down the right wing. His direct pass found Louis Johnson free in the circle, with just the keeper to beat. His first time shot was headed for the corner, but expertly deflected around the post by the Lindum goalie as he dived down to his right. 10 minutes later, Lindum broke quickly down the right. The first shot was miss-hit by the attacker, but ended up with a Lindum player ,who slotted the winner, from close range.

Captain Rob Cooke said "That game hurt more than any other result so far this season, because we deserved to get something from it, in my opinion. Our connections and forward play was good and our transitions across the back worked well. We are improving and becoming more comfortable with each other on the ball.

We won so many short corners which have been working on doing, so that’s great. What we need to work on now is converting theses chances in future.

This game has shown us how we are improving each week, and always in the game".

After the October half term break, the team will resume with another home game, when they face Newcastle University on Satuday 4th November.
