Chesterfield v Durham University 4s

Chesterfield Men’s first team faced off against Durham University Fours on Saturday 9th December.

Still looking to get points on the board, Chesterfield expected a tough battle against a well drilled team who are near the top of the table.

Despite a growing injured list, which included stalwarts of defence Alex Kennerley, Will Beardshall and now team captain Rob Cooke, the side was ready for the battle ahead.

Durham started the game strong and fast paced resulting in Chesterfield conceding an early goal. Undeterred by the extremely adverse weather conditions and bolstered by a new signing from New Zealand - Tom Collier, Chesterfield fought back with Dan Caron grabbing an equaliser, ending the first half 1-1.

Chesterfield started the second half strong and Louis Johnson found the back of the goal giving chesterfield the lead. Durham repainted well and managed to counter grabbing an equaliser for themselves. A tense end to the game saw Chesterfield remain composed and despite continuous, unrelenting pressure from Durham, manage the game well, resulting in a final score of 2-2.

Captain Rob Cooke, watching from pitchside, reflected “it’s frustrating watching from the sidelines, but the boys performed great. Despite the pressure they remained composed and secured a much needed point. It’s a good feeling going into the Christmas break with our season finally up and running. I’m proud of how the team have held it together in the face of a bad run of results. It shows that hard work pays off and they should be proud of their performance today”.

Chesterfield hope to build on this result in their next game against Doncaster 2s on 6th January.
