Hearty performance and positives to take forward

Ben Rhydding v Chesterfield
Final score:
2-0 (1-0)

Player of the Match - Tom Collier

Chesterfield Men’s 1s trudged through the northern trenches of Leeds and onto Ben Rhydding Hockey Club on their hunt for their second win of the season. After a long trip up the M1 the boys limbered up for what would be a relentless battle against well drilled opponents.

Chesterfield soaked up some early pressure with excellent defending from Alex Kennerley and good saves from Ryan Matchett, the score remained at 0-0. Chesterfield began to gain some momentum against a shaky Ben Rhydding defence where a good bit of close control by James Scattergood brought a short corner and a chance to open the scoring. However, their efforts went unrewarded and after a calamity of Chesterfield errors Ben Rhydding opened the scoring with a calmly taken deflection and from that Chesterfield seemed deflated as the half time whistle went.

Looking somewhat revitalised Chesterfield took to the second half with good intensity. The game began to open up and despite Chesterfield’s best efforts provided in the form of Luke Nash and Ryan Speed who looked bright in the opposing area. This lead to no luck as Chesterfield were unable to break the deadlock. As hopes began to rise in the Chesterfield camp a series of bad decisions were made and it seemed that it wasn’t to be for Chesterfield as after a green card and an unlucky short corner Ben Rhydding made it 2-0. Despite it looking like a mountain to climb, Cam Taylor and Zach Scothern still pursued with purpose and were unlucky not to be rewarded. A glimmer of hope came as Chesterfield won a short corner and with Tom Collier still in search of a first goal for Chesterfield it seemed as though everything Chesterfield did Ben Rhydding had an answer for.

In summary , a hearty performance with some positives to take forward, Chesterfield look to bounce back from this 2-0 defeat under the lights away at Lindum next Friday.

Chesterfield manager Callum Taylor had this to say ‘the team stuck to the task for 70 minutes this week and will be looking to take the fighting spirit over to Lindum in what will be an exciting game under the lights on Friday evening. The lads are going to train hard midweek with a fully fit squad to choose from expectations are high amongst the lads.’
