Wilfrid B (Bud) Nightingale
Chesterfield Hockey Club was just one of Bud’s passions.
I’ve known Bud from when he was introduced to the Club by his elder brother George, sometime during the 1960-61 season.
He immediately started playing in goal for the 1st XI, where he made his mark as an accomplished goalkeeper and shortly thereafter was given Derbyshire County Hockey Association appointments. At that time, he was a student at Sheffield University without any form of transport and a limited amount of cash. Travelling to Derby Cricket Ground for home matches via public transport was a problem and an even bigger problem travelling to away matches, so he reluctantly requested them not to select him any more.
Bud was a popular selfless member and Club stalwart who firmly believed in giving back more to the Club than he took from it, as demonstrated by this short summary of his personal contributions.
Initially he volunteered to be Publicity Officer for 3 years during 1966-69. Followed by 4 years as Club Secretary during 1971-75, which is arguably the most onerous administrative Club role.In the 1975-76 season, although still performing well at higher team level, rather than blocking any up-and-coming junior goalkeeper, he chose to stand down and take on the new role of 5th XI Captaincy where he further encouraged junior members in their endeavours. He was elected Club Captain, a position he held for 4 years from 1976-80.
During the 1980s he generously decided that the Club would derive most benefit from his services if he stopped playing and became a regular Club umpire.
Although I hadn’t seen Bud for quite some time, we did occasionally meet when we were shopping at Morrisons. Our conversation usually started by exchanging notes on our respective geriatric conditions, then how our wives and family were fairing, before inevitably discussing Club affairs. I know from these discussions that Bud has left us hoping that eventually, when the Nethermoor Sports Development CIO is successful in selling it’s 6.5 acres of land at Tupton, the Club will be able to apply to the charity for a grant towards obtaining new facilities and to recreate the original 1947 dream that became a reality at the Nethermoor Road ground during the period 1978-93.
Thank You Bud, God Bless and Rest in Peace.
