Chesterfield Hockey Club Men's 1st Team – Leadership Announcement
We're delighted to confirm the Men's 1st Team leadership structure for the upcoming season.
Head Coach – Christian Battye
Christian returns to Chesterfield Hockey Club after 3 successful seasons with the University of Nottingham 2nd XI. Christian previously coached the Men’s 1st XI for 5 years, as well as over 300 club appearances as a player. He previously worked within the EH junior pathway at the East Midlands Performance Centre from 2018 - 2021, becoming Head Coach in 2019.
Christian also completed the GB Hockey Advanced Coach Programme, graduating in summer 2020 as part of cohort 3.
Having been involved with the club for many years as both a player and coach. His deep understanding of the club’s values and culture, combined with extensive coaching experience across different levels of the game, makes him an excellent choice to lead the Men's 1st Team. Christian’s passion for developing players, strong tactical knowledge, and commitment to driving high standards will be invaluable as the squad looks to build on its success.
Assistant coach - Ella Kenney
Another new addition to the coaching team, Ella has over six years of coaching experience and holds a GB Hockey sessional coaching qualification. She graduated from Loughborough University in 2025 with a BSc Degree in Sport and Exercise Science and completed a Diploma in Professional Studies, gaining practical experience as a sports coach in private education during her degree. The current women's first team player of the year, she will support the delivery of the team's ambitions both on and off the pitch.
Ella’s coaching journey began at Chesterfield Hockey Club and schools in the surrounding area, where she developed her skills working with young players and introducing them to sport. Since then, she has coached a range of sports, age groups, and abilities, focusing on skill development, teamwork and creating positive sporting experiences.
Team Manager – Paul Speed
A familiar and respected figure around the club, Paul’s quiet but commanding demeanour and his organisational skills, dedication, and support for players and staff will be invaluable throughout the season. His experience and commitment help create the environment needed for success.
Captain – Jack Hartley
Last season’s captain and top goal scorer, Jack Hartley, will again lead the team by example both on and off the pitch. His work ethic, professionalism, and ability to bring the group together make him a natural choice, and he will continue in his role as captain for the upcoming season.
Vice Captains – Ryan Speed & Zach Scothern
Ryan and Zach have both demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities, commitment, and passion for the club. Their experience, communication, and ability to support teammates will be key in driving standards and helping the team achieve its goals.

Men's Club Chair, Rob Anderson, had this to say about the appointments "With a strong leadership group in place, we're excited for what promises to be an ambitious and successful season ahead".
