Addy orchestrates Chesterfield win

Chesterfield Hockey Club 1s - Sheffield Hockey Club 2s
Final Score: 4-3 win

League leaders Sheffield arrived at Chesterfield with the Yorkshire - North East Division 1 title within reach, while Chesterfield sat in 8th place before the match. With other results in the league confirming Chesterfield’s safety from relegation, the home side could play with freedom — while Sheffield knew a win would secure them the league title.

Chesterfield started brightly, counter-attacking with pace and causing problems for the Sheffield defence. Midfielder Jonty Duffy was particularly dangerous early on, making several skilful runs on the counter that stretched the visitors and forced them onto the back foot.

The breakthrough came when impact substitute Ben Truby made an immediate difference, with a cross that took a deflection and found its way into the goal, to give Chesterfield the lead.

Sheffield responded quickly, equalising five minutes later through a scrambled short corner routine that was eventually slapped into the sideboard.

Chesterfield didn’t let that slow their momentum. Player of the match Ollie Addy (picture) produced a moment of quality, beating his defender before calmly lifting the ball into the top corner to restore the lead. The pressure continued to build and Jack Hartley added a third, getting the final touch on a well-worked short corner routine to deflect the ball high into the net.

Just before halftime, Hartley struck again during a goalmouth scramble from another short corner, putting Chesterfield into a remarkable 4–1 lead at the break, leaving the league leaders stunned.

Sheffield came out firing in the second half and began to pile on the pressure. They pulled one back in the 50th minute from a short corner after the initial flick was saved, with a Sheffield forward reacting quickest to knock in the rebound and make it 4–2 to Chesterfield

The visitors continued to push forward and with five minutes remaining capitalised on some indecision deep in the Chesterfield circle to bring the score back to 4–3, setting up a tense finish.

At the back, the Chesterfield defence stood strong, well marshalled by returning Kiwi Sam McPherson, who helped organise the team through a sustained spell of pressure. In the closing minutes, Alex Mycroft and Sam Gower also showed impressive composure and experience for such young players, helping the team manage the final stages of the game and keep Sheffield at bay.

Despite the late surge, Chesterfield remained calm and saw out the game to secure a superb victory over the league leaders. Final score, Chesterfield 4 - 3 Sheffield

The result makes it five wins in a row for Chesterfield, and a statement performance against top-of-the-table Sheffield.
