Chesterfield made the short hop across the bypass to meet Sheffield University Bankers on a fine sunny afternoon in October.
The vibes were high following a fantastic win last week, with the tunes blasting and a debrief from the Hunter Gatherer and his right-hand man, Rob Cooke.
The game started with back-and-forth action from both sides when veteran Kennerley surged forward with ferocious pace and found himself free to smash home, however, a great save from the keeper resulted in the ball falling back to the cool, calm, composed veteran to slot home. 0-1.
Shortly after the Bankers winger skilled the back line and slotted home. 1-1.
Following a series of back-and-forth action the Greens found themselves down to 10 men after the Hunter Gatherer received a green card for stick tackle, but the lads rallied together and managed the deficit in men well.
Just before half-time, the Greens found themselves winning a short corner in which the red-eyed Hunter Gatherer converted a drag flick as if he was out with his hunting rifle. 1-2. Shortly after, the Greens won another short corner in which a Beardsley slap found Callum Taylor’s deft deflection, which rifled into the top corner. The celebrations were huge; in Adebayor-fashion he sprinted across the pitch to celebrate in front of the away fans with hands cupped behind his ears. Although he still felt the need to inform the umpire 7 times of his shirt number, the famous 14. 1-3.
The chaps rallied together for half-time with wise words from Cowley, Barrett, Beardsley and Cooke conducting the team.
The second half began, and Sheffield appeared to find their shape, which confused Chesterfield.
Controlled link-up play from Grant and Wright allowed Chesterfield to ease themselves into the second half. And pressure in the pitch from Bingham saw the Greens out for the rest of the game. It ended 1-3 to Chesterfield. Another great win, and the Greens are looking forward to a home game versus Doncaster.
