Chesterfield 3s found themselves in another tough game against a very good Sheffield side. With many of the younger players asked to play in unfamiliar positions and some of the older guys carrying injuries it was always going to be difficult.
However, Chesterfield acquitted themselves well and were competitive for the vast majority of the game. Basic errors gifted Sheffield two goals in the first half, and as a team, we must learn from this. When Chesterfield held their shape, tracked their players and were committed in the tackle we were more than a match for the opposition. But switching off for just a brief moment will allow chances to be created and Sheffield took advantage of this.
A flurry of green cards at the start of the second half made for a slightly disjointed game, Sheffield scored a third early in the second half, but Chesterfield got back into it with a coolly finished rebound from a short corner by Will Winter Smith. This goal seemed to give the team confidence, however as per other games Chesterfield were guilty of over committing and allowing spaces in behind which led to further goals from the home team.
Final score - Sheffield 4s 5 - 1 Chesterfield 3s
Whilst the result was disappointing, the performances of many of the younger players was encouraging. Ellis, as a first time centre back showed maturity to his game, Noah was a willing recipient of the ball at left back and did well with his distribution. Dan and Max worked tirelessly in the midfield along with Ollie.
Captain and Man of the Match Paul Ryan said afterwards; ‘We need to keep working hard and keep focused for the whole 70 minutes, if we do this, we have a great chance of picking up points’
