On a sunny spring afternoon, Chesterfield Hockey Club 3rd Team brought their season to a close with a spirited performance against a strong Sheffield University Bankers 4th side, who came into the game sitting third in the league.
Chesterfield started brightly, showing attacking intent from the first whistle and creating several promising chances. However, Sheffield also looked dangerous on the counter, ensuring it was an open and competitive contest early on. The breakthrough came for Chesterfield after excellent persistence from Rob Smalley, who kept the ball alive in the circle under pressure, allowing Joe Bamford to slot home with a neat backhand finish.
The goal sparked a response from the home side, who raised their intensity and soon found an equaliser after capitalising on a rare turnover, dispossessing Chesterfield skipper Paul Ryan before finishing clinically. Despite further encouraging attacking play from Chesterfield, they were unable to convert their chances, and Sheffield made them pay by taking the lead just before half-time.
The second half proved more challenging for the visitors, as Sheffield took control of the game. Two quick goals early in the half effectively ended the contest, putting the result beyond doubt. To their credit, Chesterfield continued to battle, and veteran forward Rob Anderson, at 51 years old, added to his impressive tally as the team’s top goal scorer with a well-taken drag flick from a penalty corner.
Sheffield, however, maintained their pressure and added two further goals before the final whistle, despite valiant efforts from goalkeeper Chris Hooper, who pulled off a number of fine saves, and stand-in defender Will Winter Smith, who made several crucial clearances. Final score 6 v 2.
While the result was not what Chesterfield would have hoped for, it marked the end of a challenging season in which results did not always reflect the team’s effort and determination. Relegation to the league below awaits, but there are clear positives to take, particularly the promising performances from younger players. With continued development and the same commitment, Chesterfield 3’s can look ahead to next season with optimism.
