Another sunny afternoon at St Mary’s School saw Chesterfield Hockey Club Men’s 3rd XI take on Sheffield 5th XI in the first round of the cup, with Chesterfield looking to build on last week’s opening league defeat.

From the first whistle, Chesterfield looked determined to put the disappointment of the previous week behind them. The home side dominated possession through both defence and midfield, moving the ball well and creating a number of early opportunities.

The only frustration was the finishing. Chance after chance came and went as Chesterfield struggled to turn their dominance into goals. However, the pressure eventually told when Chesterfield were awarded a penalty corner. McCormick stepped up and produced a clean strike to finally break the deadlock and give Chesterfield a deserved 1–0 lead.

Despite having the majority of the play, Chesterfield remained alert to the threat posed by Sheffield, particularly on the counter-attack. The visitors looked capable of causing problems when they broke forward, but the Chesterfield defence remained organised and disciplined to preserve the advantage going into half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Chesterfield continuing to control the game through a strong defensive and midfield performance. There were further opportunities to extend the lead, but once again the finishing could have been more clinical.

Sheffield continued to threaten on the counter and forced Chesterfield to remain focused, but the home side eventually got the second goal their performance deserved. Anderson made the game more comfortable with a neat close-range finish to put Chesterfield 2–0 ahead.

The visitors refused to give up and produced a late flurry of penalty corners, putting the Chesterfield defence under pressure. However, the home side stood firm, defending resolutely to see out the final stages and secure both a clean sheet and their first win of the season.

The Chesterfield captain was pleased with the improvement from the previous week, particularly the dominance shown in defence and midfield and the overall response from the team. However, there was also a recognition that there is still plenty of room for improvement, particularly when it comes to being more clinical in front of goal.

A well-earned first victory of the season and a positive step forward, but the message from the captain was clear – there is still more to come from this team.
