Fresh off the back of their first win of the season last week, the Men’s 4s welcomed the return of skillful Charlie Garrod, veterans Perry Tugby and Nick Kennelly, and skipper John Cusack back into the fold for their second trip to Rotherham in two weeks—this time in the Men’s Plate Peak & Wold Open competition.
Rotherham started strongly out of the blocks, catching Chesterfield out of formation a few times, but thankfully their efforts didn't pay off.
A handful of close calls woke Chesterfield up. Some beautiful play in the centre of midfield by Colin McConnell and Max Lawson released the formidable duo of Seth Close and Charlie Garrod down the right-hand side, catching Rotherham off guard and allowing Femi Colton to bury his first of the game into the bottom corner.
From that point on, Chesterfield controlled possession. Excellent runs from Clayton Morton on the left wing resulted in a short corner, with Perry Tugby stepping up to the top of the D and slingshotting the ball beyond the reach of the keeper to double the lead before the break.
In the second half, Rotherham came out of the blocks with renewed energy, utilising their bench to swap fresh legs regularly and forcing Chesterfield to play more defensively. A crash ball from outside the D into a crowd of players took a clever deflection off a Rotherham stick, bringing the difference back down to a single goal.
Rotherham smelt blood and began piling players forward, but the attacks were repelled by Chesterfield’s strong backline, featuring game-saving clearances from John McCollum and young goalkeeper Tyler Hunter, who commanded his D with complete dominance throughout.
On the break, Chesterfield won another short corner. This time it was Femi who made the backboard rattle to restore the two-goal cushion. That proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Rotherham close to the final whistle, with Chesterfield comfortably seeing out a well-earned 3–1 win.
