Last game of the season

There was talk of snow in the air at Sheffield on Friday night, but come Saturday morning the sun was out and the teams were ready for hockey.
With the season ending for most senior teams, the badgers were able to call up Rob Cooke and Alex Kennerley for their debuts! Thanks to both for helping out. They both ended up playing a full game, and told me they ran as many miles as they usually do in a senior game and also **SPOILER ALERT** enjoyed being on the winning side for a change!

The first half started with Sheffield having a bulk of possession and driving down our left and right hand sides. The pressure built and Sheffield secured some penalty corners, but these were dealt with by Kaitlyn in goal. Chesterfield were reduced to the counter attack, which was effective but the final ball was either mis-controlled or didnt quite run and so neither side took the lead in open play. After 20 minutes, and bolstered by Freya's (late) arrival the team started to build the play, and put together some nice passes. This eventually lead to a penalty corner. Without instruction, the badgers set themselves and after a quick injection, Dan Mc controlled the ball and then dispatched with a fantastic strike in to the bottom corner of the net, leaving defenders and GK with no chance.

Half time came and Dan (captain for the day) handed Easter chocolates to the Sheffield and the umpires (we hoped it might slow them down!)

The second half ebbed and flowed with the feel of a cup tie as the attack went from end to end. Kaitlyn made a super reflex save that prevented a certain goal, and defended a number of short corners and good kick clearances. Meanwhile at the other end, the team was able to press really high with all the team, bar Kaitlyn, sometimes in the Sheffield half. There were no more goals in the end, and so the game finished 1-0 to Badgers. Although we don't play for the win, we'll take it to finish the season off.

Thanks to Sheffield and the umpires, always a nice bunch to play against - skillful, fast and strong, but above all they have a positive attitude. Fair play to them, they played without any adults and gave us a run for the money!

The badgers will stir themselves for action one last time this coming Saturday. The much awaited grudge match - Badgers v Parents - starts at 10.30am at St Mary's and promises to be leveller for all!
