Match Report: CHC Women’s 1s vs University of Leeds 2s Penultimate game of the season
Fresh from securing the league title, CHC Women’s 1s welcomed University of Leeds 2s for their penultimate game of the season. Captain Kendellen’s pre-match message was simple: enjoy the game without pressure, while continuing to perform with the intensity and quality that has defined their season.
CHC made the perfect start. From the pushback, Kenney drove forward to begin a slick passing move involving Elliot, Davies and Gregory. Just 30 seconds in, Gregory popped the ball over a defender’s stick before firing home her trademark strike to make it 1–0.
Leeds responded with sustained pressure and eventually found an equaliser after 21 minutes. CHC then regained composure through the calm saves of Calderbank and distribution of Kendellen, Thring and Fisher, allowing the team to push forward again. A brilliant baseline drive from Walton set up Davies at the post to restore the lead at 2–1 (30’).
Leeds struck back just before half-time from a penalty corner, sending the teams into the break level at 2–2.
CHC settled well in the second half, with Elliot, Kenney, Mills and Witts working tirelessly in midfield. Elliot’s superb distribution and skill on the ball helped CHC control the tempo. A strong press from Gregory forced a turnover, and her unselfish square ball allowed Davies to score her second and make it 3–2 (44’).
Moments later, pressure from Witts, Saunders and Robinson forced an error, with Robinson and Gregory combining to set up Davies for her hat-trick and a 4–2 lead.
Leeds pulled one back on the counter at 56’, but CHC quickly responded through the outlet of Kendellen and Walton. Robinson found Gregory whose hit into the circle was deftly touched past the keeper by Davies for her fourth goal and 5–3 (58’).
Leeds pushed hard in the final stages, but superb defensive efforts – including crucial clearances from Calderbank and Saunders – ensured CHC held firm until the final whistle.
