Chesterfield Women’s 1s got their season off to a fantastic start with a convincing 5–1 victory away at Scarborough Women’s 1s.

After a lengthy two-hour journey to Scarborough, the team arrived ready to get the season underway. Well… most of them. Ruth’s late arrival will no doubt be discussed at the next team meeting — and a fine may well be heading her way!

Despite the long journey, Chesterfield started brightly, moving the ball around well and creating a couple of early openings.

The pressure paid off after 12 minutes when Lucy opened the scoring from a short corner. The ball was slipped left before taking a deflection and looping over the Scarborough goalkeeper. Ella picked up the assist, giving Chesterfield the perfect start.

The second goal also came from a short corner. Linz struck the initial effort, which was saved, but Ruth was on hand to mop up the rebound and make it 2–0.

Chesterfield continued to look dangerous, and the third goal soon followed. Elise played the ball into Linz, who took it on at the top of the D before firing into the bottom-left corner to give Chesterfield a comfortable 3–0 lead.

The second half became a little scrappier, but Chesterfield showed good composure to regain control and started winning some excellent short corners.

The fourth goal came from another set piece. Linz looked to find Ruth at the back post, but the ball was intercepted. However, Elise reacted quickly to win possession back before finding Ruth, who squeezed the ball into the goal to make it 4–0.

Scarborough then managed to pull one back for a consolation goal. There were questions over a potential foul in the build up which resulted in vice captain, Ella, receiving a green card.

Chesterfield weren’t finished there. Another short corner was received by Linz, who played a neat one-two with Ella before finishing with an embarrassingly slow trickle into the goal to complete the scoring.

A brilliant start to the season for Chesterfield, with five goals, some excellent short-corner routines and a strong team performance despite the long journey.

A great result to build on — and a reminder that Ruth’s fine is still outstanding.
