Match Report: Chesterfield W2 vs. Chapeltown W2

The match began with an early chance for Chesterfield W2 in the 5th minute, when they were awarded a short corner but failed to convert. Chapeltown responded with a brief spell of possession, but it was Chesterfield who then dominated control. In the 17th minute, a beautiful long ball from Emma Chapman found Esme near the D. Esme’s strike on goal was well-aimed but failed to convert. However, the move had a noticeable impact on Chapeltown, as Chesterfield’s pressure mounted, and it marked the beginning of a dominant period for the W2’s.

Another short corner in the 28th minute, but it was cleared away by the Chapeltown defence. However, the pressure continued, and in the 33rd minute, Freya Wrigley had a great solo run into the D, but again, the ball failed to find the back of the net.

In the final couple of minutes of the first half Chapeltown secured their first short corner, but their attempt on goal was well defended by Chesterfield. The closing seconds of the first half came to a dramatic end with Holly falling whilst defending in the D. The first half ended with both teams locked in a goalless draw, though Chesterfield’s dominance in play was clear.

The second half started with a contested goal (42mins) being awarded to Chesterfield. Esme was credited with the goal, which seemed to shake Chapeltown’s composure. The home side was now 1-0 up, and their confidence grew as they early looked for a second goal.

Chesterfield continued to press, earning a short corner (50mins). Kara, Jen, Chloe M, Sarah and Sophia worked the midfield well. Anna, Emma and Abi G forming a solid defence. The action continued with a breakthrough by Kara (54mins) found Esme who passed to Abi L for another attempt on goal, but the shot was just wide of the post.

Top supporter Carl Mills described the ball as a Hot Potato as the action remained intense between the two teams.

Sarah secured the W2s their second goal (56 mins) with an assist from Kara and Chloe M. The goal gave Chesterfield a comfortable 2-0 lead, which they defended for the remainder of the match.

There were nominations for POM for Sophia, Abi G, Sarah, Esme, Holly and Jen but POM this week goes to Chloe Mills who had a brilliant match.
