Saturday at St Mary’s saw the Peak Women’s Division 2’s ‘derby match’ for Chesterfield Women’s 2's and 3's. A crucial match, not only for the club but especially for the 2's and their quest to finish towards the top end of this league table this season. A positive 5-1 result sets the 2s in good stead for the coming weeks.
Entering into the match, the 2's knew they must remain focused and on their toes. Training together each week meant the opposition knew exactly how we would approach this game. Despite early leads into goal from Esme Anderson, impressive saves from the opposition's goalkeeper meant the ball could not pass through. Chesterfield 3’s defence domination continued with 2 short corners unable to be converted. A well-positioned goal from Chesterfield 3's was the first on the score sheet. Chesterfield 2's had to come back fighting. Great transfers across the pitch saw 2 goals before halftime, with the first half ending 2-1.
Half-time discussions focused on ball control and working the ball down the line in pairs. Objectives were clearly understood, with our midfielders working the ball down both wings seamlessly and our defensive line remaining strong. With both teams starting to tire, the 2's were able to take the advantage. The final 25 minutes saw 3 goals from Abi Grocutt and Kara Perry-Mason, with assists from Elise and Macie. The well-battled match ended 5-1 to Chesterfield's 2 and was a credit to both teams commitment to recent training.
PoM was awarded to Abi Grocutt.
