Last match of the year on home turf and top of the table, pressure on!
With everything to play for, Chesterfield Women’s 2’s gave a spirited performance but ultimately fell to a tough 3-1 hard-fought defeat to Sheffield.

The match game began with Chesterfield on the front foot, pressing high and earning a short corner in the third minute. A well-drilled routine saw the ball fired towards the goal from Emma, but the opposition’s goalkeeper made an excellent save to keep the game level. The early chance sparked confidence in Chesterfield women, but Sheffield were quick to settle. Following with another short corner gained 8 minutes into the game for Chesterfield. This was excellently executed by Abi G however Sheffield’s goal keeper produced another fine save.
As the game progressed, Sheffield began to exert pressure and broke the deadlock midway through the first half, scoring on the counterattack making the score line 1-0 in the 13th minute.

Chesterfield responded with determination, refusing to let the pressure of the occasion weigh them down. Their persistence paid off late in the first half when a quick break down the right flank led to a dangerous cross into the circle from Nic to Jasmine however this failed to convert. In the 20th minute Elise rapidly flew up to the D and fired a powerful shot at the goal which was unfortunately deflected. With more attempts from the forwards and midfielders including Esme and Jasmine. Chesterfield’s defence held strong, with crucial blocks and clearances out of the D.

The match heated up in the latter stages of the first half, with both teams competing fiercely for control. Emotions boiled over when a Sheffield player was shown a yellow card for foul language, giving Chesterfield a brief numerical advantage. Despite their best efforts to capitalise, Sheffield went into halftime trailing 1-0.

Sheffield came out strong in the second half, tripling their lead. Yet, Chesterfield refused to back down and their perseverance payed off in the 63rd minute, fuelled by fizzy worms half time snack (thanks to Esme). After some excellent pressing in midfield, Jen won the ball and delivered a pinpoint pass to Macie on the wing who drove the ball swiftly into the D to Jasmin. Jasmine then passed the ball to Elise who latched onto it and rifled the ball into the net, to bring the score to 3-1.

Chesterfield threw everything forward in search of another goal, with the midfield working tirelessly to support the attack. A series of penalty corners and circle entries kept the opposition defence on high alert. But Sheffield were running on tinsel power through out!

Though the match ended in disappointment, Chesterfield showed resilience and determination throughout. Sarah’s dynamic presence in defensive midfield earned her the player of the match, while Elise’s clinical finish was a standout moment in the match.

Chesterfield Women’s 2s head into the new year with plenty to build on, remaining at the top of the league. With their talent and fighting spirit, they will look to bounce back stronger in 2025 and continue their push for success.
